background: This gene encodes a zinc finger protein with an N-terminal Kruppel-associated box-containing (KRAB) domain and 11 Kruppel-type C2H2 zinc finger domains. Like other zinc finger proteins, this gene may function as a transcription factor. This gene resides on an area of chromosome X that has been implicated in nonsyndromic X-linked mental retardation. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [provided by RefSeq, Jun 2010] Function: ZNF674 belongs to the krueppel C2H2-type zinc-finger protein family and contains 11 C2H2-type zinc fingers and 1 KRAB domain. ZNF674 may be involved in transcriptional regulation. Defects in ZNF674 may be the cause of mental retardation X-linked type 92 (MRX92). Mental retardation is characterized by significantly sub-average general intellectual functioning associated with impairments in adaptative behavior and manifested during the developmental period. Non-syndromic mental retardation patients do not manifest other clinical signs. Subcellular Location: Nuclear Tissue Specificity: Expressed in testis.
