background: subunit of the NMDA receptor glutamate gated ion channel; displays voltage dependent sensitivity to magnesium, calcium permeability, and glycine regulated activity; may facilitate learning and long term potentiation [RGD, Feb 2006] Function: NMDA receptor subtype of glutamate-gated ion channels with high calcium permeability and voltage-dependent sensitivity to magnesium. Mediated by glycine. Subcellular Location: Cell membrane. Cell junction, synapse, postsynaptic cell membrane. Tissue Specificity: Primarily found in the fronto-parieto-temporal cortex and hippocampus pyramidal cells, lower expression in the basal ganglia.
