background: This gene encodes a type II transmembrane serine protease. The encoded protein has an extracellular region that consists of two domains, a catalytic serine protease domain and a non-catalytic scavenger receptor cysteine-rich domain. This protein may be involved in diverse cellular functions including blood coagulation, maintenance of cell morphology and the growth and progression of certain cancers, particularly prostate cancer. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants. Function: Plays an essential role in cell growth and maintenance of cell morphology. May mediate the activating cleavage of HGF and MST1/HGFL. Subcellular Location: Membrane; Single-pass type II membrane protein. Tissue Specificity: Present in most tissues, with the highest level in liver. Similarity: Belongs to the peptidase S1 family. Contains 1 peptidase S1 domain. Contains 1 SRCR domain.
